Caspar David Friedrich, “Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog,” (1818).

Hi everyone,

It’s been a busy summer. I was traveling and finishing the first draft of my novel, which I am now revising. I read a bunch of Toni Morrison novels. I started gardening. The world has continued to hurtle towards collapse, or we are living through the collapse, or something that feels distinctly scary. I have felt at very loose ends.

Earlier this year, I started writing a newsletter. I intended for it to be a monthly dispatch, but fell off that quick. But I’ve missed writing my newsletters, and I’ve started to wonder if forcing myself to do so again, and to stick with the schedule this time, would help to introduce some sense of regularity and structure to my life. I’m going to try, and I want your help.

Starting next month, I will be launching a Substack to help me with accountability for this project. Each month, I will publish two updates. One will be free and the other will be behind a paywall, if you feel inclined to help fund this project.

The free piece will be a life update, including reflections on the San Francisco art scene, links to my recent publications, a selection of art shows I recommend but haven’t otherwise covered, what I’m reading and how my garden is doing. The paid piece will be an original piece of writing, along the lines of a personal essay.

I might publish other stuff, too, like dialogues with artists and other writers, music reviews or sports commentary. I don’t know. Let’s see where this goes.

Here is a link to subscribe, if you’d like to follow along. I’d love to have you.
